CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING
Now you can begin to adjust the video levels, starting with the contrast. Adjust
the contrast so that the darkest element of the picture, where it should be black, appears
at 7.5 percent on the Waveform.
Next, adjust the brightness (the brightest parts of the picture should not exceed
100 percent on the Waveform). If you do not have any elements in the image that are
actually white, shuttle ahead on your tape until you find one. Examine the Waveform
carefully. There should not be any part of the picture, no matter how small, that
exceeds 110 percent on the Waveform.
Take a look at the color. If you do not have SMPTE color bars on your tape, this
is difficult at best. If you do, adjust all of vectors so that they fit into the appropriate
color box in the Vectorscope. If the vectors are off to the right or left of the box, adjust
the hue. If they are smaller than the boxes or go beyond them, adjust the saturation
until they fit correctly into each color vector.
If you have no color bars and the colors in your image look okay, don’t adjust
the saturation or hue. If the color tends to appear more green or red/magenta, try
adjusting the hue until it looks like the color is more balanced. If the picture appears
washed out, try adding color with the Saturation adjustment. Remember, too much sat-
uration causes noise, so don’t overdo it. If the image appears too colorful and the video
looks noisy, try pulling the saturation down until the noise goes away and the image
looks best.
Adjusting Audio Levels
Now you can adjust the audio levels. First, you should adjust audio levels coming from
your deck or camera. If your deck or camera has an audio adjustment tool, adjust the
audio to proper levels using the meters on the deck or camera.
Most DV decks do not have an adjustment on them because the audio is
recorded digitally and will reproduce the same way. If you are using Mojo, there is no
way to adjust the incoming audio, because Mojo keeps the audio in the digital domain.
If you have a tone recorded on the tape, it makes adjusting the audio easier. If
you don’t have a tone, try to find a place in the tape where the audio is loudest.
Remember that you are adjusting the sound level to prevent distortion, so you want to
make sure that the loudest point of the tape does not overmodulate and cause the
resulting clip to be distorted.
Open the Audio tool on the Capture tool . Your meters should appear. Next,
play back the tape and open up the Audio settings (see Figure 2.38). Choose Input and
move the audio slider up or down while looking at the audio meters. Be sure not to
exceed +0 on the digital scale and +14 on the VU scale. After you’ve made the adjust-
ments, your audio setup is complete. Close the Audio settings.
