Moving a Segment
Note that there is a bin titled Timeline. Open this bin and load the sequence titled Mov-
ing Segments. Inside the sequence are several still shots numbered from 1 to 7. The first
thing that we will do is move a single segment to a desired location. Ready?
1. Turn on the Extract/Splice function by clicking the yellow key on the bottom-left
side of your Avid. The key should light up when you click it.
2. While holding down either the F key (Macintosh) or Ctrl key (Windows) click
the second segment in the Timeline and drag it to the right.
Notice that, as you’re dragging, the position indicator is snapping or shifting to
the beginning of every segment in the Timeline.
3. Park your segment so that it appears on shot number 7.
4. Release the mouse.
You have successfully moved shot 2 down to the place where shot 7 existed and
you’ve also extracted shot 2, so shot 1 is followed by shot 3.
Now let’s try something different:
1. Undo (Ctrl+Z/F+Z) until all the shots are in normal order. In this section, we’ll
do the same thing, except use the Lift/Overwrite key.
2. Click the Lift/Overwrite key (the red button at the bottom left of the Timeline).
3. Click the shot labeled as shot 2. Using the F or Ctrl key, click it and move it
down so that it snaps over shot 7.
4. Release the mouse.
