CHAPTER 7: EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS
Palette Effects
Every effect can be placed into one of two categories: transition effects and segment
effects. Transition effects are effects that are used or applied at the transition point
between two separate clips. Examples of transition effects can be wipes, fades, and
dissolves. Segment effects are specific effects that are applied to the segments of your
sequence. Examples of segment effects are masks, pictures in pictures, and resizes.
Some effects can be in both categories. For example, you can use a circle wipe as a
tool to vignette, but it can also be a transition.
Using the Effect Palette
All the effects available in Free DV and Xpress Pro can be accessed through the Effect
palette (see Figure 7.13), which can be accessed by selecting the Project window and
clicking the Effect tab, or you can choose Tools
> Effect Palette (Ctrl+8/F+8).
Figure 7.13 The Effect palette in (left) Free DV and (right) Xpress Pro
The Effect palette has two columns. The left column contains a list of categories.
As each category is chosen, the list on the right changes. The list on the right is a list of
effects within the chosen category on the left.
For example, if you were interested in looking at Blend effects, you would first
click the Blend category in the left column. The right column would display the differ-
ent types of blends available on your system: Dip To Color, Dissolve, Fade From Color,
and so on.
