CHAPTER 7: EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS
Next to the font key is a size register . You can enter a custom size or
click the arrow to use a preset size for your font.
The alignment keys ( : left alignment, center alignment, and right align-
ment) are object-oriented keys that align your text relative to the object that you created.
In other words, these keys do not align your text relative to the screen (see Figure 7.10)
but instead to the text object that you created when typing them.
Figure 7.10 Left-aligned object is not relative to the screen but to the object itself.
The next key is the kerning key . Kerning is the adjustment of hori-
zontal space between letters. When using the Text cursor and selecting letters, you can
move them closer or farther apart. Some fonts have situations in which kerning is
needed between certain characters. You can also use kerning to achieve a look or style
with the font by expanding it or contracting it. You can either use the kerning presets
(normal, loose, or tight) or type a number in the register. Negative numbers produce
tight kerning (see Figure 7.11), positive numbers create loose kerning, and 0 denotes no
kerning.
To the right of the kerning register is the leading key . Leading (pro-
nounced as led-ding, or if you’re an old hippie like me, Led as in Led Zeppelin) is the
space between lines of text. You can create each line of text and move it closer or far-
ther away from the others (see Figure 7.12) or you can use this key.
Just like kerning, negative leading numbers create tight spaces and positive lead-
ing numbers loosen the space between lines.
