than that of standard-definition television
(SDTV) whose standards are recommended
by the Advanced Television Systems Com-
mitttee (ATSC). Currently there are 18 differ-
ent formats for HDTV.
head frame The first frame in a clip of film or
in a segment of video.
headroom 1. Visually, the amount of room
that should be between the top of a person’s
head and the top of the image in frame com-
position. 2. Technically, the amount of gain
allotted before distortion or clipping of an
audio or video signal is encountered.
heads out Film or tape wound on a reel with
the beginning of the media on the outside of
the reel.
Hertz (Hz) A unit of frequency equal to one
cycle per second.
hi-con An 8-bit, grayscale representation of
an image that determines masked areas for
keys. Also referred to as alpha channel,
holdout, cookie cutter, key channel, matte,
and mask.
HIIP Acronym for Host Image Independence
Protocol. A system that allows the Avid
system to import and export files in various
standard formats. Also called Image
Independence.
histogram In color correction, a graph that
plots the distribution of pixels in an image
based on their brightness. Histograms plot
luminance on the x axis and recurrence of
pixels on a y axis.
H phase Horizontal phase. The horizontal
blanking interval of a given video source.
H-phase is measured between sources and
calibrated to prevent shifting of the video
image in analog composite video.
hue An attribute of a visual sensation that
defines a specific shade of color. Hue is mapped
on a vectorscope, which indicates degrees of
red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, and magenta.
ICC Acronym for the International Color
Consortium, formed in 1993. The ICC
promotes interoperability of color imaging
systems.
IEEE 1394 The international hardware and
software standard for transporting data at
speeds of up to 400 megabits per second
(Mb/s) (1394a) or up to 800 megabits per
second (Mb/s) (1394b). Also known as iLink
(Sony trademark) 1394 and FireWire.
illuminant A source that reflects or transmits
light.
ink numbers Also called Acmade numbers.
Inkjet numbers that are added to a workprint
and mag stock for reference. Can be used in
some nonlinear editors (NLEs). Also used for
preview code. Key numbers are more com-
monly used for digital editing.
in point The starting point of an edit.
insert edit An electronic edit in which the
control track and longitudinal timecode
(LTC) timecode are not replaced during the
editing process.
interlock projector The projector used for
screening workprint and dailies. It consists of
a film projector and mag track player that
can be “interlocked” and remain in sync.
IP Acronym for interpositive print. Created
from the original camera negative (OCN),
this positive print is used to duplicate a nega-
tive. IPs are created for items on a dupe list.
IRE A unit of measurement on a National
Television Standards Committee (NTSC)
