CHAPTER 5: TRIMMING ■
Usually adding the edits would mean cueing up to the transition point, selecting
all the video and audio tracks with no media on them, and adding an edit to them by
pressing the H button (Add Edit) on your keyboard.
Tutorial: Trimming Sequences
Now that you understand what trimming can do, you can try out your newly acquired
skills. In this tutorial, you’ll analyze trim sides, use different trimming methods to see
how they work, and get comfortable with the Trim tool.
Analyzing Trim Sides
Your first mission is to clean up the blip sequence. First, open up the bin entitled Trim
and find your sequences inside. Double-click the blip sequence to load it. Go ahead and
play it back—I’ll wait.
At every transition point, some anomalous and annoying sound occurs. These
sounds are very close to the edit point and need to be analyzed further. First, park your
blue cursor on the Timeline near the first edit.
Now you’ll enter Trim mode. Here’s how you’ll do it:
1. Take a deep breath.
2. Click the Trim button located underneath the record side monitor (Figure 5.21).
It looks like a little 35mm roll of film.
Viola! You’re in Trim mode and located on the first edit.
Play back the transition using the Play Transition Loop button (it’s the button
located below and center of the B-side monitor). It looks a lot like the Play button, but
it has a little slash running through the middle of it.
Your transition will play continuously until you press the Play Transition Loop
button again or press the Stop button on your keyboard. Could you tell which side
of the transition has the blip noise? I couldn’t. Let’s analyze the transition by playing
back the A and B sides. If you’ve stopped the Play Transition Loop button, start it
up again.
As the transition loop plays back, press the Q button on the keyboard, which
changes the Play Transition Loop so that it plays only the A side of the transition. After
it plays the A side, it stops and plays it again continuously. Did you hear the bad audio
by playing the A side?
