CHAPTER 3: BASIC EDITING ■
Now you might be wondering, “How well did I mark it?” Let’s find out. Go to
your Settings tab in the Project window and double-click the Keyboard settings. A key-
board should appear. Leave the keyboard up on the interface so that you can see all the
functions available.
Press the Q key, which cues the clip up to your marked in point. Now press
Play. What you will hear is the clip played from your marked in point. Does it sound
right? Probably not. This is a tough point to mark, so you have to try some other tools
to locate the correct point. Go back to the in point (press Q) and you’ll do a little
scrubbing.
First, try digital scrub. To digitally scrub the audio, do the following:
1. Press the Caps Lock key.
2. Scrub back and forth around the area of your in point by pressing the 3 key (on
the alphanumeric keyboard, not the numeric keyboard). The 3 key moves a sin-
gle frame backward every time you press it. Or you can hold the 3 key down
and it will progress backward frame by frame. Notice that you can hear each
single frame of audio as it moves backward.
3. You can use the 4 key on the alphanumeric keyboard to move forward frame
by frame.
4. When you’ve found the right point, click the Mark In icon underneath the
Source monitor.
5. Now press Q on the keyboard to return to the marked frame and press 5 to play
it back.
Does it sound better this time? You might do better by trying analog scrub. Ana-
log scrubbing is achieved through the letter keys. Here’s how to do it:
1. First, turn off digital scrub (press the Caps Lock key again) and cue up to your
marked in point (Q).
2. Now you use the J, K, and L keys on the keyboard. To scrub backward on the
clip, hold down the J and K keys together, which should cause the clip to play
backward at about
1
⁄
4
speed (approximately 8 frames per second [fps]).
3. To move forward, hold down the K and L keys again, pressing them at the same
time, which moves the clip forward at
1
⁄
4
speed. With analog scrub, you can hear
as the clip rolls, not one frame at a time, but continuously.
You can also “rock and roll” through the piece by holding your fingers on J, K,
and L. Rock backward by holding J and K and then roll forward by holding K and L.
This is a great way to find your points. Every time you attempt to find and mark a new
point, press Q followed by Play until you’re satisfied with the in point.
