GLOSSARY
A bin normally consists of a series of hooks
that overhang into a nonfibrous bag. The
clips are attached to cardboard trim tags that
visually identify the scene, take, edge numbers,
and a short description. The tags and clips
are hung on pins and cascade into the bag.
nonlinear editors (NLEs) have virtual or elec-
tronic bins, where pointers to media files
(clips, sequences, and subclips) are located.
NLE bins are used in much the same way as
film bins, with the added feature of the ability
to copy clips into several different type bins.
bit A contraction of a binary digit, normally
having a value of 0 or 1. The smallest unit of
information that a computer can store.
black and code The process of recording black
video, timecode, and control track onto
videotape stock. This process is also referred
to as striping or blacking.
black burst A black video signal with no other
luminance or chrominance. Black burst can
be used as a reference signal for synchroniz-
ing video and audio components.
black burst generator An electronic device that
emits a black burst signal, usually with mul-
tiple outputs so that devices can be referenced
or synchronized electronically together.
blacked tapes See black and code.
blue screen A special effects procedure in which
a subject is photographed in front of a uni-
formly illuminated blue background. A new
background image can be substituted for the
blue during the shoot or in postproduction.
Also referred to as chroma key.
B-mode A method of assembling an edit deci-
sion list (EDL). In a B-mode EDL assembly,
the editing system performs all the edits from
tapes that are currently assigned to the decks
and then finds the next tape sequentially in
the list for full assembly of all of its edits
in the list, leaving gaps for material to be
filled by subsequent tapes. Also referred to as
“checkerboard” assembly.
bps Acronym for bits per second.
brightness A visual stimulus that gives the
observer a perception of more or less light.
bumping up The transfer of a program
recorded on a lower-quality videotape to a
higher-quality videotape; for example, a
recording from DV to Digital Beta.
burn-in Refers to character-generated num-
bers superimposed on video and telecine
transfers. Typical burn-ins include video
timecode, audio timecode, and key numbers.
BVB Acronym for Black-Video-Black. A pre-
view mode in linear editing systems that dis-
plays black, newly inserted video, and then
black again. Used for checking for flash frames
when longitudinal timecode (LTC) is used.
B–Y One of the color difference signals in the
component color system of the National
Television Standards Committee (NTSC)
video standard. The signal formula is:
B–Y = 0.299R (red) – 0.587G (green) +
0.886B (blue)
calibrate To adjust levels or instruments for
maximum precision.
calibration The process of correcting any devi-
ation from a standard set of specifications.
camera roll A roll of motion picture film used
in production, usually 400 feet or 800 feet in
length. Each roll is assigned a unique number
for reference. Also called cam roll.
camera report A report issued for each camera
roll by the camera department of a motion
