opposed to other systems, it will use the “look-ahead” function of RAM to prevent

dropped frames.

In some cases, the RAM buffer gets behind because of a system bottleneck. Sys-

tem bottlenecks can be common with computers based on a variety of factors, includ-

ing your video card, bus speed, RAM speed, and CPU speed.

If you encounter a situation in which Xpress Pro is having difficulty playing

back a stream of real-time effects, you can give the system more time to fill the RAM

buffer.

1. Go to the Project Window and select the Settings tab.

2. Double-click the Video Display settings (see Figure 7.18).

3. Under the Pre-Filled Frames selection, enter 10.

The system spends an extra 10 seconds prefilling the buffer.

Playback Stress Indicators (Xpress Pro)

When Xpress Pro has difficulty playing back effects sequences, it has the ability to indi-

cate exactly why and how the system is encountering difficulties. These stress indica-

tors are located in the Timecode track of your Timeline, and they will show you what

and how to remedy playback problems.

After playing back your sequence, take a look at the Timecode track. You may

notice some tiny colored bars just above the timecode numbers. These bars indicate prob-

lem areas of the sequence. The color of the bars determines the problem encountered.

Red Bars Red bars indicate a taxed system. In these areas, Xpress Pro dropped frames

to play back your sequence. Generally speaking, red bars indicate that your CPU isn’t

working fast enough to play back the problem-affected area. The only solution is to

render this area.
