CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT ■
Importing Photoshop Graphics (Xpress Pro)
Xpress Pro can work with the layer’s capabilities that are normally used with Adobe
Photoshop version 6 and above. When importing a Photoshop graphic (.psd file),
Xpress Pro will ask whether you want to import it as one flattened layer, a sequence
of layers, or a sequence of chosen layers. This third option allows you to ignore layers
that you will not use. When you import the file as a sequence of layers, it will produce
a matte key clip for each layer and a regular clip for the background.
Xpress Pro also creates a sequence with all the layers in order, just as they were
in the original Photoshop file. You can animate each layer (as shown in Figure 6.10)
or use the layers with their alpha files over a different background.

This new capability has been something that I personally wanted for a long time.
Previously, to do something like this was time-consuming and fairly difficult. For
example, if I had a Photoshop file with 15 layers and a background, I would normally
have to convert each of the layers into separate files and then import them. But with
this advanced capability, it takes only a single import to do all the work.
After the layers are all imported, you can build a sequence for animation or add
effects to individual layers. The layers can be used as matte keys over other back-
grounds as well.
Note: One thing that is not supported is the blending mode in Photoshop. All layers will be imported
with normal blending mode,so if you are trying to create a special effect using a blending mode, try re-creat-
ing it using the Effect palette in Xpress Pro.
Note: When importing Photoshop files, make sure they are 8-bit files, not 16-bit files. You can check this
in Photoshop by opening the file and selecting Image > Mode.If the file is 16-bit,change it to 8-bit and save it
before importing.Otherwise, you will get an error screen and no layers when importing.
