■ A TOUR OF THE INTERFACE
Mark In This button marks an in point on the Source side. When playing back media,
you can update Mark In by clicking the button again.
Play Plays back the media in the Source monitor.
Mark Out Same as Mark In, but marks an out point.
Note: When you have marked your in point and out point correctly, the icons will appear to be shaped
like two faces looking at each other ].If the round “faces”are not “looking”at each other, the clip
is marked incorrectly .
Mark Clip Marks an in point at the first frame and an out point at last frame of the
clip in the Source monitor.
Clear Both Marks Clear Both Marks will erase the in and out marks on the Source side.
Add Locator The Add Locator button allows you to add a mark to help you locate
a particular section of a clip that might be used later or for reference, as shown in
Figure 3.43.
When you add a locator, a little red dot will appear under your Source monitor. (This
dot will not appear when you play back the clip.) If you click the dot underneath the
picture, a box will open up (see Figure 3.44), which will allow you type information,
such as why you added the locator in the first place.
Let’s take a moment to describe why locators are used. Some of your clips might con-
tain lots of different subject matter. For example, let’s say you shot a lot of footage at the
zoo and digitized it in one clip. From there, you can add a locator for monkeys, another
for alligators, a third for elephants, and so on. Using the locators when you edit will make
it easier for you to access the right information without shuttling through the entire clip.
Splice The yellow Splice button is one of two record buttons on the interface. When
splicing, you are doing what is called “nondestructive” recording. In other words, any-
thing that appears after your current edit will be moved downward in your sequence
versus erasing whatever exists after your edit. This is the major difference between the
Splice button and the red Overwrite button.
Note: If you play back media and click the Mark In button using the mouse, the playback will stop.If you
like to continuously mark during playback without stopping the media from playing, use the Mark In and Mark
Out buttons on the keyboard.
