NESTED EFFECTS AND COLLAPSING (XPRESS PRO)
Yellow Bars Yellow bars indicate areas in which the system is stressed to its limit, but
did not fail to play back all frames. You should consider making some kind adjustment
to alleviate the problem. Pre-filling frames, freeing up extra memory by exiting from
other applications, and other CPU-freeing methods can be used. If you’re concerned
about playback performance, and the edits in this area are pretty well locked in, it
might be wise to render.
Blue Bars Blue bars indicate that the drives on your system reached a high stress level,
but that everything played back okay. You might consider using a faster drive or recon-
figuring the drive in some manner to assure faster access to media.
Using ExpertRender (Xpress Pro)
If you just played back a sequence that dropped frames, you can have ExpertRender fix
your problem areas. ExpertRender is Xpress Pro’s smart render engine. It knows the
rules of rendering and will only select those items which need to be rendered to ensure
playback for different situations.
To fix dropped frames, play back your sequence and immediately choose Clip
>
ExpertRender.
The Laws of Rendering
Let’s face it: Rendering is painful. The whole concept of random-access nonlinear com-
puterized editing means that it takes less time to do and is more fun. So here are a few
axioms about rendering to consider.
Render as little as possible. You might be surprised by how few actually do this.
When you add a non–real-time effect and already know it will work, render it when
you’re done with the sequence. You can always adjust it later, if necessary. If you have
a choice between using a real-time effect or a non–real-time effect (and it doesn’t matter
which is used), choose the real-time effect. If you’re building a multilayered effect that
exceeds your maximum streams limit or contains non–real-time effects, don’t render
until all the layers are added. If you can wait until the sequence is finished before doing
a render, wait.
For multilayered effects, rendering the top layer will also render the effects
below it. This is much less time-consuming than rendering each individual track. Let
Xpress Pro do the work for you. Whenever possible, use Expert Render.
Nested Effects and Collapsing (Xpress Pro)
Effect nesting is a powerful feature of Xpress Pro that utilizes its ability to build an
effect within an effect. Before we go too far, let’s discuss one of the most common
problems associated with vertical effects: transitions.
