■ MORE TRIMMING CONSIDERATIONS
the A side of the transition will play, and you will be able to detect whether or not it
has the stray frame. Select the W button to loop the B side of the transition only. By
isolating the sides of the transition, you should be able to find the bad frame.
For Xpress Pro users, this process will work only if you have retained the default
keyboard mapping of the Go To In and Go To Out buttons. If you have not, instead of
using the Q button on your keyboard, press the key that you have assigned for Go To
In. Instead of the W button, press the key that you have assigned for Go To Out.
Adding Filler While Trimming
In some cases, you might want to trim on one side of a single track and keep everything
in sync (see Figure 5.17). The best way to do it is to add filler while trimming. To add
filler while trimming, go into Trim mode and select one side (A or B) of a transition.
While clicking and holding on the pink rollers, hold down the Alt key (Windows) or
Ctrl key (Mac). This adds or subtracts filler on the unselected tracks so that sync is
maintained. Make sure that you have sync locks turned off during this operation.
Another way to maintain sync while adding filler is to turn the sync locks on.
Whenever you trim a single side and add frames, it adds filler on the tracks to maintain
sync. If you try to reduce frames from a single track, it will refuse the edit.
Extend Function
In some cases, you might want to extend a single or multiple tracks forward or back-
ward to a specified point without entering the Trim mode. For example, if cutting a
news story, you may add an on-camera sound bite, which in turn can have video
extended backward to backtime the viewers to the sound. This sort of introduction of
a newsperson is fairly common. It is easier to select the video track on the incoming
shot and extend it backward to a cue point than to enter Trim mode.
Note: Over the years,a lot of my students have tried in vain to use the Extend mode for trimming. This is
like the pie without the à la mode, the pizza crust without the toppings, the … well, you get the idea. Please,
for the benefit of your own education and your survival out there in the editing world,do not use Extend
mode for such purpose. It takes much more time to do an extend than a trim, and you would be avoiding one
of the best features of Free DV and Xpress Pro.
