synchronous with the previously laid control
track. Also be referred to as crash record (for
example, in the Avid Digital Cut tool).
crawl The function of the Title tool that cre-
ates text that moves horizontally across the
screen versus a vertical title roll.
cropping The redefining of image boundaries.
Cropping can be done by removing portions
of the image or by masking them.
crossfade An audio transition in which two
sources are swapped electronically, one fad-
ing out as the other fades in. Also called
audio dissolve.
CRT Acronym for cathode ray tube.
cue To advance a videotape to a specific
location.
curves graph Used in color correction, a curves
graph plots input color values on the hori-
zontal axis and output color values on the
vertical axis.
cut An instantaneous transition from one
visual source to another.
cut list An edit decision list (EDL) for film.
Instead of timecode numbers, edge numbers
are used.
cyan A subtractive primary color which
absorbs red light and reflects or transmits
blue and green light.
DAC Acronym for digital-to-analog converter.
DAE Acronym for Digidesign Audio Engine.
Used for audio plug-ins.
dailies The results of a single day of shooting.
Usually refers to workprint made from a sin-
gle day of shooting, but can also refer to a
videotape transfer of the footage. Referred to
as dailies because of the traditional method
of shooting, developing, and printing
overnight. Same as rushes.
DAT Acronym for digital audiotape. Audio-
tape recording format used by many sound
recordists and audio engineers. Society of
Motion Picture and Television Engineers
(SMPTE) DAT is most commonly used.
datacine A telecine capable of scanning and
creating large image files that go beyond the
constraints of standard-definition television
(SDTV) video. Datacines can be used for
storing color-corrected frames of film and the
files they create can be scanned back onto
film, avoiding the need for traditional color
timing.
daylight A combination of skylight and direct
sunlight.
daylight illuminant A device that reflects or
transmits the same spectral characteristics as
daylight.
decibel (dB) A unit of measurement for sound
pressure (audio volume) level.
deck controller A tool that allows the user to
remotely control a deck using standard func-
tions such as shuttle, play, fast-forward,
rewind, stop, and eject.
decompose To create new master clips based
on material used in an Avid-edited sequence.
degauss To demagnetize (thus, erase) all
recorded material on a magnetic tape. Can
also refer to demagnetizing a monitor that
might have some outside magnetic interference.
delay edit Linear video editing term for an L-
cut or overlap edit.
depth shadow A solid shadow that extends
from the edges of a title or shape to make it
appear to be three-dimensional.
