GLOSSARY
V-LAN An upgradable software protocol,
developed by Videomedia, for video device
control used by proprietary hardware between
the computer and the controlled device.
VLX A series of controllers developed by Video-
media that control and synchronize profes-
sional video equipment for animation, video
editing, high-definition television (HDTV),
and broadcast television production. Uses
V-LAN software as control protocol.
VTR Acronym for videotape recorder.
VU meter Volume unit meter. An instrument
used to measure audio levels.
VVV Acronym for Video-Video-Video. A pre-
view mode that shows a previously recorded
scene, the new insert video, and the adjacent
scene after the inserted video. Most common
form of preview on linear edit systems.
WAVE RIFF Waveform Audio File Format. A
widely used format for audio data.
wild lines Dialogue that is recorded without
the camera rolling.
wild sound Sounds that are recorded without
the camera rolling.
window dub Refers to character-generated
numbers superimposed on video and telecine
transfers. Typical window dubs could include
video timecode, audio timecode, and key
numbers.
wipe A shaped transition between video
sources in which a margin or border moves
across the screen, wiping out the image of
one scene and replacing it with another.
workprint Positive prints (workprint) of film
created from the original camera negative
(OCN). Usually consist of only the takes
that the director orders printed. (Hence the
director’s on-location phrase, “Print it!”)
Workprint is disposable and used for editing.
It gets cut, hung in a bin, spliced and unspliced
together, cursed at, and abused. If destroyed,
it can be reordered from the lab. If additional
takes need to be printed, the editor can order
them from the lab.
X axis The horizontal axis in a three-
dimensional graph or system.
Y The luminance signal of the component
color system in the National Television Stan-
dards Committee (NTSC) video standard.
The signal is composed of the following pro-
portions of red, green, and blue:
0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B
Y axis The vertical axis in a three-dimensional
graph or system.
Y, R–Y, B–Y The luminance and color difference
signals of the component color system in the
NTSC video standard.
yellow One of the subtractive primaries that
absorbs blue light and transmits green and
yellow light.
Z axis The zooming axis that is perpendicular
to the X and Y axes in a three-dimensional
system.
zero-duration dissolve The method of editing
two scenes end-to-end simultaneously within
a single edit.
