picture production. Includes scene numbers,
takes, circled takes, footage, and other infor-
mation. A copy of this multicarbon form
should be sent to the editorial department.
capture To input video and/or audio into a
nonlinear editor (NLE) format. Also known
as digitizing or ingesting.
CCD Acronym for charged coupling device. A
sensor used in digital video cameras and
other photoelectric devices to convert light
into electricity.
CCIR Acronym for Consultative Committee
for International Radio, an international
body that sets television standards. Now
referred to as ITU-R.
CCIR 601 A document issued by the CCIR
that recommends specifications for digital
component video. Now referred to as ITU-R
BT.601
CCIR-709 A document issued by the CCIR that
recommends specifications for high-definition
television signals. Now referred to as ITU-R
BT.709.
CES Acronym for color encoding specification.
change list A list of instructions comparing an
updated cut of a sequence to its previous ver-
sion. Simplifies changes for the person con-
forming by only listing updated revisions and
new edits.
changeover The point at which the projection-
ist switches between reels during display of a
motion picture. Changeover cue marks must
be made 24 frames before the last frame of
action (LFOA).
character generator A device that creates
alphanumeric characters that are superim-
posed on video.
characterization The process of defining color
characteristics for a model of input or out-
put device; used with color management
modules.
charge-coupled device A sensor used in digital
video cameras and other photoelectric devices
to convert light into electricity. Also referred to
as a CCD.
chroma The color component of a video
signal.
chroma curve Graph used in Color Correction
mode that adjusts color values.
chromadynamics The human response to color:
psychological, physiological, or cultural.
chroma key A special effects procedure in
which a subject is photographed in front of a
uniformly illuminated blue background. A
new background image can be substituted for
the blue during the shoot or in postproduc-
tion. Also referred to as blue screen.
chroma subsampling A technique for sampling
image information, usually for storage on
videotape, in which luma is stored at full res-
olution but chroma components are reduced.
Often referred to by ratio, in which 4:2:2
would refer to 4 pixels of full luminance, 2
pixels of horizontal chroma for each channel
of chroma information, and 2 pixels of verti-
cal information for each channel of chroma
information.
chroma wheel Controls used in Color Correc-
tion mode to adjust hue and saturation.
chrominance Refers to the properties of color.
chunking A method of transferring media files
to a workgroup in segments so that users can
begin using the files without the entire file
having been sent.
