PALETTE EFFECTS
Applying Effects
Applying effects to your sequence is a simple drag-and-drop operation, just as I
described previously. To apply an effect:
1. Open the Effect palette and choose an effect category from the left column.
2. Choose a specific effect from your category in the right column.
3. Click the effect and drag it into the Timeline to its desired location. The effect is
applied.
When an effect is applied through drag and drop, certain defaults will take place:
If the effect is a transition effect, its duration is one second long (30 frames NTSC
or 25 frames PAL).
The effect is centered so that its midpoint occurs at the original cut point. The
effect would occur 15 frames before the transition in its default state and would
overlap 15 frames into the cut point.
Removing Effects
To remove an effect:
1. Place the blue position indicator on the effect in the Timeline. Make sure that
the track where the effect is located is selected.
2. Click the Remove Effect button under the Record monitor. The effect dis-
appears.
You can also remove a segment effect by using the Timeline Segment editing
modes. To do this:
1. Select either Extract/Splice or Lift/Overwrite (the yellow or red buttons at the
bottom of the Timeline).
2. Click the effect—or even Shift-click multiple effects—that you want to delete.
3. Click the Delete button. The effect or effects are deleted.
Real-Time Playback of Effects
Real-time playback can be achieved on some effects because of the fact that CPUs are
getting faster. Almost all the Avid effects in your Free DV/Xpress Pro system can be
played back in real time, right after you apply them. However, third-party AVX plug-ins
(available on Xpress Pro only) must be rendered to enable playback of the effect.
Both Free DV and Xpress Pro have the capability of playing back up to five real-time
effects simultaneously.
Note: There are more details on real-time effect playback later in this chapter.
