CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO AVID AND EDITING ■
The Avid Product Line
Today, Avid has several different nonlinear editing systems. They all basically do the
same thing, and the interfaces are very similar. Eventually, it will become easy for you
to migrate from one Avid system to the next.
In spite of new technological developments, older Avid systems still are in exis-
tence today, from the earliest Media Composers to the newer Adrenaline models. For
the editor, it is important to recognize these because you might find yourself editing on
one of these other systems, in addition to the Free DV or Xpress Pro models that are
latest state-of-the-art systems.
The Days of Avid/1
In 1989, the first Avid system, the Avid/1 (see Figure 1.2), was created on an Apollo
computer. It was well into research and development, but not yet released, when Apple
Computer stepped in and offered technical support, development tools, and both hard-
ware and software to Avid developers. From that development period came the first
Media Composer.
I remember a filmmaker bursting into my online editing suite with an EDL (edit
decision list) that came from an Avid. He was very excited and tried in vain to explain
to me the nonlinear difference. Instead of actually explaining it well, he kept screaming,
“It’s nonlinear! Don’t you see! I edited all of this nonlinear!” The word nonlinear wasn’t
even in my vocabulary, and I had no idea what it meant. But this chap apparently had
nothing short of a religious experience with a thing called an Avid.
In those days, development came slowly. New ideas were almost nonexistent
when it came to the video-editing process. We editors felt that the systems that we had

Dreamy, Isn’t it?
Note: The exceptions are Avid D|S and D|S Nitrus systems, which were originally created by SoftImage,a
company that Avid acquired.D|S systems are primarily used for compositing many separate images into a
single frame. The interface is very different.
