CHAPTER 3: BASIC EDITING
Timeline Settings for the Timeline (see Figure 3.26) include different controls for the
Timeline display as well as settings for Timeline editing.

Trim The Trim settings (see Figure 3.27) determine the preroll and postroll times when
playing back a trim preview. When trimming and analyzing each edit, you have a pre-
roll, which is the time in which footage is played before the edit point, and a postroll,
which is the footage played after an edit. When playing a trim loop, it repeats itself
until you tell it to stop. You will often want an “intermission,” in which the loop actu-
ally stops before replaying itself. The Intermission settings are here. The Features por-
tion of the Trim settings is used for enabling J-K-L controls. J-K-L controls are enabled
only on Xpress Pro, and they are worth the cost of upgrading to Xpress Pro all by
themselves. They are one of the best navigation controls invented by Avid.

Video Display The Video Display settings (Figure 3.28) determine how many streams
of video that you want to play at one time, as well as buffer settings for playback. Just
a word of caution here: I tend to stick with the defaults because if you try to increase
these numbers for maximum playback power, it tends to slow down other functions.
On some occasions, it can cause video underruns, in which the system will not be able
to play the capacity requested—usually when too many streams of video and unren-
dered effects are on the Timeline.
