EDITING WORKFLOW
Capturing material in this way enhances the creative process, as we discussed. All
of a sudden, the project becomes bigger than the sum of its parts. You can add more—
as much as you like—until it becomes better and better. It’s something akin to adding
tracks to a musical recording. The more tracks, the better. (In some cases, at least.)
Reading the history of modern musical artists is interesting. Paul McCartney
of the Beatles didn’t want to add orchestra to the piece. George Martin insisted. The
result was a modern classic. It happens all the time, both in music and video. The
more tracks, the better.
Using Free DV and Xpress Capture tools, you’ll need to make a few primary
decisions before going through the procedure. These decisions are discussed more in
Chapter 2, but here they are:
How much drive space do I need to complete this program?
What resolution should I use? (Not necessary for Free DV.)
What will be the final medium for output?
How do I name or number each tape?
I mentioned that these are done before capture. Again, without some form of
structure, projects atrophy. If you make some of these decisions later, it will take more
time to restructure the project, which gives you less time to create and complete it. As
you become more familiar with Free DV and Xpress, you will highly value that creative
thinking time. We’ll cover capture completely in Chapter 2.
Edit
The next step in the workflow is to edit (see Figure 1.10). That may sound like com-
mon sense, but there’s one thing that’s different. When I mention edit, I mean to say
that you will put together the elements in the order you believe they should go. The in
points and out points of each picture might not be “tight” at this point. The rhythm of
the scene might not match what you want yet. But there are other tools for this, as you
will see.
Note: I remember editing some promotional pieces for the movie Tequila Sunrise. A friend had gone to
see it and mentioned a steamy hot tub scene.I replied,“Hot tub scene? Hot tub scene? Where was I?” It was
decided to add the scene after I edited the promotionals (promotional pieces are frequently edited well before
the release of the picture),so I missed out.But I am getting ahead of myself here.
