■ THE CAPTURE TOOL: CAPTURE CONTROLS
If you want to add information during capture, click in the Name box and start typing.
To switch from the Name entry to the Comments entry, use the Tab button on your
keyboard. Any comments entered after tabbing will appear in the Comments column of
your bin.

It’s a good idea to do some postproduction planning before naming clips and
bins. The same conventions that apply to bin naming apply here. Come up with a
method and stick with it. For example, films use Scene/Take, thus a clip named 15/11
is Scene 15, Take 11.
Video organization can be a little more tricky. On video projects, I name clips by
whatever the slate reads. If there is no slate, I paraphrase the dialogue as the clip name.
If there is no dialogue, I look for the primary subject in the clip or try to find the name
of the element in the script or production assistant notes.
The Message Bar
Just below the input buttons is a mostly blank area used to update you with the status of the
Capture tool. The message bar will tell you what mode you’re in (Capture versus Logging, for exam-
ple),whether you are batch capturing, currently recording, and so forth.Having some means of
communication with the Capture tool is important, especially when you’re new to the system. The
message bar can reassure you that the system is doing what you intended.
Note: You might think that your next project is too simple or basic to require any thorough project man-
agement. However, even though I don’t know the specifics of your project,I can assure you that project man-
agement is always needed.For example,if you’re editing together a wedding video,you might decide,“Well,it
is only one camera and it’s just a wedding ceremony.”Then you discover that there are five hours of footage,
including multiple shots of relatives, the cake, the cutting of the cake, the after-wedding dance, and so on.
Even those projects that seem simple need organization.
