Mini-Timeline
Just below the Source and Record monitors is a mini-timeline (see Figure 3.40). This
timeline allows you to skip through material instantly or quickly. For example, you can
place your cursor on the mini-timeline and drag it to quickly scan through footage, or
you can click the Timeline to go to a specific place instantly.

A word about the mini-timeline. Nonlinear editing allows not only for random
editing but also for random access. Many times I see editors who are new to nonlinear
dragging through Timelines to find a specific point. This is usually unnecessary, espe-
cially if you know approximately where the point exists. Just click the mouse on that
section of Timeline and you’re instantly there!
Source and Record Buttons
With both Xpress Pro and Free DV, a single row of buttons is displayed underneath
both monitors (Figure 3.41). This row of buttons contains some of the most com-
monly used functions, as we discussed earlier in the chapter. With Xpress Pro, you can
customize these interface buttons. Free DV cannot do this, but there is a “hamburger”
(Fast menu) button in the middle of the row that displays other functions.
