Adding a Slate
Adding a slate will help you identify the sequence, creation date, total running time, and
other information. The slate (see Figure 6.33), which can be created in the Title tool,
doesn’t have to be too fancy. In fact, some of the most incredible commercials and video
trailers for motion pictures use plain old black background slates with white Helvetica
type. But you can decide for yourself. Be sure to allow 10 seconds of black after the slate.

In some cases, you might want to add a countdown from 10 seconds to 2 sec-
onds before the program begins. This is usually done for broadcast only. Again, you or
your producer can decide what is adequate. A countdown can be generated using the
Title tool. Some effects footage libraries have fancy countdowns. Of course, no one will
see this except the client, yourself, and whoever uses the tape.
