■ THE CAPTURE TOOL: DECK, CAMERA, AND TIMECODE CONTROLS
• There must be very little space between start/stops. The system understands that
there is no sync between shots and will roll forward. But if you have shots with,
say, five minutes of blank tape in between, the system might not be able to find
the next sync piece.
• The system will capture everything that is timecoded with sync and on the tape.
If you have need for disk space and there are plenty of outtakes on the tape, this
might not be your best option.
Logging (Xpress Pro Only)
Logging with the Capture Tool
The Capture tool can be used as a logging station. To the right of the Capture button is
a small disk icon with the letters DIG (for digitize). Click this icon and it changes to a
pencil icon with the word LOG. You have now successfully switched to Logging mode.
In Logging mode, you can still shuttle the machine and enter timecode just as
you do during Capture. The difference is that the actual Capture function is disabled.
When you log, the timecode and clip information go into a bin, but the media itself are
not captured on your hard drives.
There are plenty of reasons to use the Logging mode:
• If you are awaiting more drive space, but want to get all of your clips ready for
capture.
• If a client is doing the logging, but is not familiar enough with setting up for
capture and wants you to control the actual process of setting resolution, check-
ing capture settings and doing the media management for the project.
• If the tapes are not present, but a handwritten or typed paper log has been
created.
Understanding Frame Code Mode
It is important when logging to know whether your source tape was recorded in drop
frame or non–drop frame timecode. Normally, most NTSC DV tapes are recorded
using drop frame timecode.
Drop frame timecode is a system of counting frames so that the actual playback
time of the recording matches real clock time. That may sound repetitive, but it isn’t.
Here’s why.
Note: This discussion applies only to NTSC video, so PAL users can skip this section.
