CHAPTER 3: BASIC EDITING
Xpress Pro has the same five toolsets available plus one more: Color Correction.
Let’s take a look at these toolsets and explore how they function to make editing
simpler.
Basic Toolset
Avid refers to the standard Xpress layout as Basic (see Figure 3.4). Although its name
might imply its popularity, it is not the most commonly used toolset (the Source/Record
Editing toolset is most used). The Basic interface has a single monitor named Composer,
which plays back your edited sequences. When you double-click a clip in one of your
bins, a pop-up monitor appears with the clip loaded inside. You can open as many
pop-up monitors as you like on the interface using this toolset.
Figure 3.4 Basic toolset
This Basic display was not created by Avid until it created the first Xpress sys-
tem: the MC Xpress. The idea is that you can access multiple clips easily, play them
back at the click of a mouse, and move from clip to clip without having to open and
reopen them. At that time, this display was what the industry referred to as “truncated
functionality.” The MC Xpress was less expensive than the other model of the day: the
Media Composer. So Avid made it so that pop-ups popped, but you could not do a
Source Record display.
Try using the Basic toolset. It’s not for everyone, but some editors actually like
it, despite the original intentions of Avid.
