CHAPTER 7: EFFECTS AND TRANSITIONS ■
Moving Keyframes
In some cases, you may need to move the position of a keyframe in the Timeline. To do
this, first select the keyframe to be moved in the Effect Timeline. Then Alt/Option-drag
the keyframe to its new position. The keyframe is moved. On some slower systems,
you’ll want to make sure that the keyframe has updated to the correct position before
you release; otherwise, you will have moved your keyframe only part of the way to
your desired location.
Copying and Pasting Keyframe Parameters
After you’ve defined your keyframes, you might want to copy and paste the same
parameters from one keyframe to another. To do this:
1. Select the source keyframe on the Effect Timeline by clicking it.
2. Copy it (press Ctrl+C/F+C).
3. Select the target keyframe on the Effect Timeline by clicking it.
4. Paste it (press Ctrl+V/F+V). The keyframe parameters from the source keyframe
are pasted.
Advanced Keyframing (Xpress Pro)
One of the disadvantages of the keyframing tool in Effects mode is the inability to con-
trol keyframe parameters independently of each other. For example, when flying a Pic-
ture In Picture effect across the screen, it might be advantageous to add more scaling
parameter keyframes while not affecting positioning keyframes.
Enter advanced keyframing (see Figure 7.17), a new capability on Xpress Pro
and other Avid systems. Advanced keyframing allows additional keyframes to be set on
single parameters; thus, many keyframes can be added to the Scaling parameter with-
out affecting the motion path or any other parameters.
Most effects have no need for advanced keyframing. It is available on Picture In
Picture, 3D, and Resize effects. To enter Advanced Keyframing mode, click the Advanced
Keyframe button on the bottom right of the Effect Editor in a Picture In Picture, Resize,
or 3D effect. The Advanced Keyframe icon is symbolized by a vertical double pink
Timeline.
The Effect Editor expands to display several parameter rows with individual
Timelines and keyframes. You can use the twirl-down menus for each parameter to
show the sliders. As you work your way down the menus, you will notice that for each
parameter slider there is a minitimeline to the right. To select a parameter, click the slider
or the minitimeline for that parameter. At the bottom of the Effect Editor is an Add
Keyframe button . With a parameter selected and the blue indicator in the middle,
try clicking that button. You’ll notice that the keyframe is added to only that parameter.
