M & E track A single or stereo pair audio track
that contains music and sound effects.
magenta A subtractive primary that absorbs
green light and reflects red and blue light.

magnetic sound recording film. Mag track
has sprocket holes and resembles film stock
in shape and size, but is coated with mag-
netic oxide.
married print A positive film print with both
picture and sound.
mask To cover unwanted parts of an image.
In film production, the U.S. common mask is
1.85:1. Also used in alpha channels to mask
unwanted elements, such as in keys.
master 1. The tape resulting from a camera
shoot or camera master. 2. The tape resulting
from editing, also known as an edited com-
posite master (ECM).
master clip In the bin, the media object in the
database that points to complete or whole
media files.
master shot The shot that serves as the
overview of a scene and into which all cut-
aways and closeups will be inserted during
editing. A master shot is usually a wide shot
showing all characters and action.
master-slave A video-editing procedure in
which one or more decks (the slaves) are set
to follow along with another in terms of its
location (the master). The difference in time-
code between master and slave is called the
master-slave offset. Also called chase.
matchback A process that allows generation of
a film cut list from a 30 fps video-based
project. Matchback lists can be + or – 1
frame accuracy per edit. A method of con-
verting from one frame rate to another; that
is, from 30 fps video to 24 fps film. Match-
back provides ease of use with the ability to
generate both edit decision lists (EDLs) for
video and cut lists for a telecined film.
Commonly used process for television
where a conformed print will be required
for distribution in other formats. Can also
refer to the application that generates a
matchback list.
match-frame edit An edit in which the last
frame of the outgoing clip is in sequences
chronologically with the first frame of the
incoming clip so as to continue the picture
or sound seamlessly without interruption.
In an Avid Timeline, this is indicated by a
small equal sign (=) across the edit between
two clips. In linear systems, match frames
are used to extend an existing edit or con-
tinue through a transition effect, such as a
dissolve.
matte key A video effect comprised of three
components: the background video, the fore-
ground video, and the matte (also called
holdout, hi-con, cookie cutter, or alpha
channel), which allows one portion of the
image to be superimposed on the other.
media Video, audio, and graphics.
media files Digital files stored on a computer
containing audio and video data.
megahertz (MHz) One million cycles per second.
Meta speed An option used on Cintel telecines
that allows for an extraordinary variety of
frame rates during telecine transfers. Meta
speed transfers can range from –30 fps to
+96 fps.
