■ TUTORIAL: CAPTURING TO YOUR AVID
3. Before going to the Capture tool, configure the deck. Go to the Project Window
and select Settings. Choose the Deck Configuration setting by double-clicking it.
The Deck Configuration menu appears.
4. Note that there are two things to select here: the channel (see Figure 2.37),
which is the way the deck will be controlled, and the deck itself. Before you can
configure the deck, you have to choose a channel for it to communicate to Free
DV/Xpress Pro. If you are using FireWire, choose FireWire on OHCI. If you are
using RS-422 nine-pin connectors, choose Direct.
5. Now you need to choose a deck. Click Add Deck in the Deck Configuration
window. A new menu appears. When you choose a new deck, first select the
maker of the deck on the left column of deck listings; then choose between the
different model numbers available. If you don’t find your particular camera or
deck in these listings, choose Generic as the device and select one of the Generic
options in the right column as the model. Remember that not every deck is
included in the templates.
6. After you’re finished, click Apply and OK. The deck is now configured.
Opening the Capture Tool
Now that our deck has been configured and our project is created, we’ll set up to do a
little capturing.
First, go to the Bin tab in the project window and select New Bin. We’ll call this
bin Capture Practice. After the bin is open, click it, and go to Tools
> Capture. The
Capture tool appears.
Adjusting Video Levels (Mojo Only)
If you’re using Mojo, click the Vectorscope icon at the top of the Capture tool . In
the next window, open both the Waveform and Vectorscope. If you have SMPTE bars
on your tape, cue the tape to that point and you can adjust the video levels.
If there are no bars on the tape, you can still adjust levels for a proper picture,
but you have to depend somewhat on the monitors to adjust levels. This is not particu-
larly easy to do. Find a section of the tape that is the most common composition used
in the picture content. If the picture content of the tape varies significantly, you might
want to adjust levels every time it changes.
