CHAPTER 5: TRIMMING ■
Button trimming is normally used as a nudging device, where each frame
advance or reverse can be monitored and played back immediately. Some editors use
the 10 frame buttons as a means to move forward in larger increments.
It might seem more intuitive to use the standard keyboard’s arrow keys for trim-
ming. Although they can be used for nudging effects, using them in Trim mode will
knock you back into Source/Record mode.
Trimming by Numerical Entry
As you continue to learn and grow as an editor, there will be many times when you
will immediately know the solution to common problems associated with trimming.
Some editors can determine, based on their experience, the approximate number of
frames needed to be trimmed in a transition. There is a certain amount of pride that
editors can take in their ability to predict the number of frames by which a transition
is “off,” or incorrect. For these editors, Free DV and Xpress Pro have the numerical
entry option.
If you prefer to directly enter a number of frames to be trimmed, enter Trim
mode, select the A side, B side, or both sides of the transition and type the number of
frames to be trimmed with a plus (+) or minus sign (–), as shown in Figure 5.10. The
transition adjusts appropriately.
One thing to note about numerical entry: After you enter a number higher
than 99, the system assumes that you are referring to seconds and frames; therefore, an
entry of 106 would result in a trim of 36 frames, or 1 second and 6 frames (1:06). If
you want to enter higher numbers in frames, enter the number and follow it with a
lowercase “f” (it absolutely must be lowercase, or else the system will not understand
the command) before pressing Enter. This lets the system know that you intend for this
entry to be expressed in frames, not in seconds and frames.

Note: The Trim buttons look an awful lot like Play buttons.Try to remember that they can be used only
while in Trim mode.
