CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT ■
Let’s take a look at each of these options as they appear in the import options in
your software.
601, Non-Square This option is chosen for graphics that have already been fully
prepped for import to Free DV and Xpress Pro. These images use non-square (the
proper nomenclature for the pixel shape) pixels and the correct size. You can use this
option when importing any image with non-square pixels that maintains a 4:3 aspect
ratio. If images are not big enough to fill the frame (smaller than 720
×486), they will
have a black border around them.
Maintain, Non-Square An image that is imported using this option has the correct
aspect ratio. It prevents a graphic from being squished or distorted when imported. It is
used when the image contains the correct non-square pixels, but might be larger or
smaller in dimension. If the image is too big (beyond the 720
×480 norm for NTSC DV
or the 720
×586 norm for PAL DV) the image will be mapped into the shape. If the
image is too small (as shown in Figure 6.4), black borders will be inserted.
Using this option does not resize the image; it is primarily used for importing
standard NTSC images, in which the dimensions are 720
×486. Using this option will
crop six of the horizontal lines, bringing the image down to the DV standard of
720
×480. If the image is too large, only the middle of the image will be imported,
cropping off any portion of the image larger than the standard import size.
Maintain, Square You can use this import option if you want to maintain the original
image size. This option is used primarily for importing logos, icons, and other items
that do not necessarily have to fill the screen. With this option, Free DV and Xpress
Pro recognize that the original contains square pixels and will adjust to fit the proper
aspect, but it will not resize the image to attempt to fill the screen (see Figure 6.5). You
can also use this option for normal full-sized files at 720
×540.
Maintain and Resize, Square Free DV and Xpress Pro use this option to take an image
that was created with square pixels and fill it to the largest dimension possible, adding
black borders on the other dimension to maintain the correct aspect ratio. Tall skinny
