Sampling Rates
The sampling rate of audio on your system is very important. You can select a sampling
rate before digitizing audio (on the Main tab of the Audio Project Settings menu; see
Figure 4.23). The highest sampling produces the best quality. Sampling rates available
are 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, and 48 kHz.
Figure 4.23 Selecting a project sample rate
Obviously, 48 kHz is the best quality, so it should be selected. On the other hand,
if all four audio tracks are used on a DV camera, the audio is sampled at 32 kHz. You
can select lower sampling rates, but they will apply globally to all the audio in your
system. Changing the sampling rate does not minimize the file size, so you should
normally go with the best quality.
Another parameter in the Audio Project Settings menu is Convert Sample Rates
During Playing. I always use this parameter, but it is especially important when captur-
ing from a variety of sources.
