PALETTE EFFECTS
Keep in mind that with segment effects, the effect will vary based on the dura-
tion of the effect, so it might move faster or slower than it did when previously applied.
You can go into Effects mode and adjust the keyframes to make the effect more to your
liking. Adjusting the effect in the Timeline in no way affects the template.
Applying Single Parameters from an Effect Template
In some cases, specific parameters of an effect might be needed. In cases such as these,
you can apply just a single parameter from an effect template. When you apply a single
parameter, Free DV and Xpress Pro use only the first keyframe in the template as a
guide. The target effect, which should already be in the Timeline, is affected only on
selected keyframes. To apply a single effect parameter:
1. Select the effect in the Timeline and go into Effects mode. The Effect Editor
appears.
2. Twirl down the parameter menu for the desired effect parameter to be replaced.
3. Select the keyframes that you want to change. If you click in the Effect Timeline,
you can use Ctrl+A/F+A to select all the keyframes.
4. Select the effect template in the bin and drag it to the parameter pane of the
parameter that you wish to change.
5. The effect is applied to only that parameter on all selected keyframes when you
release the mouse.
Saving an Effect with the Source
In addition to saving just the template, you can save the effect template with the source
material included. To do this, Alt-click/Option-click the Effect Template icon and drag
it to a bin. When the template is saved with the source, it will indicate it in the tem-
plate name; that is, Resize with Src.
Some effects actually work in exactly the opposite way; for example, matte keys
and Title effects. To save these effects without the source, you drag them to a bin.
Timecode Navigation
In Effects mode, the Timecode display window above the record window changes (see
Figure 7.15). Two new elements are added: Effect Duration and Current Position.
The position number is particularly of interest because it not only refers to
frames but it also refers to fields. Thus, 12.2 would be the 12th frame, second field.
You can navigate by typing frame numbers in Effect mode much as you would navigate
by timecode in Source/Record mode. Type a plus (+) or minus (-) followed by any
two-digit number, and the frame will move forward or backward by the number of
frames that you indicate.
