■ DIGITAL CUT
Look Busy!
If the sequence is really long and it takes more time than you anticipated, here are some addi-
tional stratagems for keeping the client distracted:
• Ask the client about the next project.
• Go over the editing timesheet and verify the times logged.
• Make more coffee.
• Run to the restroom.
• Tell a joke or perform a magic trick.
• Ask the client to show you a picture of their kids or grandkids.
• Query the client on their favorite hobby or subject.
• Dust the monitors.
I’m sure that some of these things may sound ridiculous (especially if you’ve never edited with the
client present),but they work.In one instance,I was editing with a client who had tried another
editor at the same facility.I tend to rake my fingers across the keyboard from time to time. This
makes a busy little clacking noise. The client told my supervisor that I was really much faster than
the other editor.Yet,on the timesheet,I took just as much time to do the same things.
My point here is that looking busy can make the client more comfortable. If you just sit at the
machine and watch the render, the client perceives you as being slow and unproductive.Above all,
when rendering, at least look busy.
Insert Edit
To do an insert edit digital cut, you need a tape that is timecoded and blacked. This
method is dependent on the deck that you use. Most decks cannot perform insert edits.
So if you’re dumping your sequence back to a deck, you cannot use insert mode.
Almost every FireWire-controlled deck cannot do an insert edit. Keep this in mind.
There are some hitches when performing an insert digital cut. The most impor-
tant is that the tape that you record to must have a continuous stream of black and
timecode. The timecode does not have to match the timecode of your sequence, but it
is a pretty good idea to do this, anyway.
Note: So how do you record a continuous stream of black video and timecode? The easiest way is to pur-
chase a black burst generator. These can cost anywhere from $100 to $300 (USD).Connect the output of the
black-burst generator to the video input of your machine and record. Some people think that recording black
from your Avid is just as good as getting a BBGen.Not true! The highest-quality pictures are made from a
source with real black, as opposed to a black still frame from your system.
