gamma 1. The slope of the straight line por-
tion of a CRT that relates log luminance to
log voltage. 2. The portion of an image that
normally defines the midtones. Adjustable by
a colorist to create more contrast in lower
luminance areas or higher luminance areas.
gamut The complete range for a set of colors
within a given color space.
gamut boundary The outermost boundary of a
color space.
gang 1. The combination of multiple tracks
that are grouped together. 2. Slaving of a
source clip to a sequence in Xpress Pro.
gang sync A gang synchronizer. Used to syn-
chronize a picture with one or more sound
tracks on an edit bench. Measures footage
and frames.
gate The aperture assembly in which film is
exposed in a camera or projector.
generation Refers to the iteration of record-
ings, usually in analog recordings, in which
the sharpness of the electronic signal wanes
with each recorded pass. For example, a
camera master would be a first-generation
recording. An edited piece would technically
be second generation. Any duplication of the
edited piece would be third generation, and
so on. This assumes that no duplication is
done digitally, where generational loss is
actually minimal.
genlock A system whereby the internal sync
generator of a device (such as a deck) locks
onto and synchronizes itself with an external
sync generator.
gigabyte (GB) Approximately one billion bytes
of information.
GPI Acronym for general-purpose interface.
In computerized linear editing systems, A
GPI is a simple switch used to a send a start
or stop command at a specific time to vari-
ous remote components, such as digital video
effects (DVEs), character generators, video
switchers, and automated audio boards.
grading The process of adjusting color bal-
ance for each scene from a conformed nega-
tive. Also called timing or color timing.
grayscale A progression of achromatic values
from black to gray to white, usually indi-
cated on a chart.
GUI Acronym for graphical user interface.
The graphical representation on a monitor of
the software interface. Frequently pronounced
“gooey.”
GVG Acronym for Grass Valley Group. A
manufacturer of video and television produc-
tion equipment. Also an edit decision list
(EDL) file format. GVG EDLs usually refer
to their software versions. Most commonly
used are 4.0–7.0.
hamburger Slang term for the Fast menu used
to access preview mattes in an Avid.
handles Material immediately before the in
point and immediately after the out point of
a clip in a sequence. Handles are used when
consolidating, redigitizing, or otherwise mov-
ing media just in case slight adjustments need
to be made to the final sequence.
hard disk A magnetic data disk that is
mounted within a drive enclosure.
hard matte Term used when shooting original
camera negative (OCN) with a matte in place.
As opposed to a soft matte, where no physi-
cal matting is done during the production
phase.
HDTV Acronym for high-definition television.
A system having greater spatial resolution
