CHAPTER 6: IMPORTING, EXPORTING, AND DIGITAL CUT ■
Creating Your Own Settings
You can create new export settings as well as use the ones described here. Duplicate
your PS Mac settings (Ctrl+D/F+D) and open them up by double-clicking them. Select
JPEG as the file type and make sure that Sequential Files is deselected. Use Marks should
be selected. After you set it up, rename the setting to JPEG. Now you have a few export
options in your arsenal, both standard and custom (see Figure 6.14). These settings can
be imported with your other settings and used for easy drag-and-drop exporting with-
out even having to create new templates!
Of course, this isn’t so exciting for Free DV users, because the number of export
formats is limited. If you do a lot of exporting, it might be time to start saving your
pennies so that you can get Xpress Pro.
Graphic Exports
Avid Free DV and Xpress Pro have the capability to output single frames and multiple
frames in sequence. These frames can be used for a wide variety of reasons.
Keep in mind that the image quality of single-frame exports is severely handi-
capped by the resolution of NTSC and PAL. If you’ve never worked with print before,
here’s a brief explanation: A standard definition frame export from Xpress Pro is 720
pixels wide and 540 pixels tall. The most basic printed image usually contains a mini-
mum of 300 dots per inch (dpi). Many printers prefer 600 dpi. So if you do the math
correctly, your exported image would best be suited for print at a size of anywhere
from 1.2 to 2.5 inches wide.
