A TOUR OF THE INTERFACE
Effects Mode The Effects Mode button changes the interface so that you are in Effects
mode. This might seem similar to the Effects Editing toolset, and in some ways it is.
The difference is that the Effects Editing toolset changes the entire interface.
Trim Mode Like the Effects Mode button, the Trim Mode button changes the func-
tionality of the interface so that you can work on transitions rather than edit additional
material. When we use the Trim mode, we are adjusting each edit so that more or
less material is shown in the transitions between edits. You might say that in Trim
mode we are fine-tuning the cut. You can also use the Trim mode for adding simple
transition effects such as dissolves and fades.
Head Fade The Head Fade button allows you to add a video and/or audio fade to the
beginning or incoming part of a sequence. Park your Timeline where you want the
transition to end, select the tracks to be faded on the track indicators, and click the
button. That’s all there is to it. The head fade begins the transition at the edit point
before the blue position indicator and continues it to wherever you have parked it.
When you bring up the Effect Editor, you can change the duration of the effect at the
bottom right of the screen by clicking the number and entering a new number of
frames for the transition.
Tail Fade The Tail Fade button acts exactly like the Head Fade button, but it applies
the fade at the end of a sequence in the Timeline. The procedure to create a tail fade is
exactly like creating a head fade, except that the position of the Timeline is on the end
of a sequence rather than the beginning.
Quick Transition The Quick Transition button enables you to add a limited number of
transition types, including dissolve, fade to color, fade from color, or dip to color. For
most purposes, this button (shown in Figure 3.53) is used as a method of transitioning
quickly between clips on the Timeline. For example, if you want to dissolve between
two scenes, there’s no need to go into Effects mode and adjust the effect—you can do it
much more quickly by clicking the Quick Transition button.
Note: We’ll be trimming like crazy in Chapter 5.
Note: Instead of seeing Source and Record monitors, the Effects Editing toolset displays a single monitor
where the effects are displayed.Clicking the Effects Mode button puts you into the Effects mode, where you
can change effects, but both Source and Record monitors remain on-screen.I tend to prefer using the Effects
Editing toolset because it focuses on one specific effect and eliminates the clutter of Source/Record mode.
