■ GLOSSARY

Interface. A standard protocol that allows a
user to control electronic music equipment
from a computer.
MII format A now obsolete component video-
tape format created by Panasonic.
millivolt One one-thousandth of a volt. A unit
of measurement on a PAL waveform monitor
for the measurement of video levels. In NTSC,
the unit of measurement for video is IRE.
mix To combine video or audio signals.
mixdown audio The process that allows the
user to combine several tracks of audio onto
a single track.
monitor A device or interface used to view
video or listen to audio.
monochromatic Having a single hue. Electro-
magnetic energy of a single wavelength. Fre-
quently confused with achromatic (without
color).
MOS From the pseudo-German, “Mit Out
Sprechen,” a shot that is recorded without
sound.
motion effect An effect that speeds up or
slows the media in a track.
motion tracking The process of generating
position information of motion in a clip.
Motion-tracking data is used to control the
movement of effects.

an annual trade show and convention put on
by this organization.

recorder widely used in the film production
and postproduction industries.

NLE Acronym for nonlinear editor. A digital

noise 1. Any aberration of a video picture
which appears to be fine specks, not smooth,
noisy. 2. Audio recording term for any unde-
sired sound, particularly excess hissing.
non–drop frame A timecode-counting method
that reflects 30 fps instead of the more accu-
rate 29.97 fps of National Television Stan-
dards Committee (NTSC) video. As a result,
this method of counting frames is not dura-
tion accurate, but each number correctly
accounts for each frame without skipping
ahead, as drop frame does. See drop frame.
Phase alternating line (PAL) timecode is tech-
nically non–drop frame because it is precisely
25 fps, hence no need for drop-frame timecode.
nonlinear Pertaining to the ability to assemble
materials from any point in the sequence.
nonlinear editing A nondestructive, random-
access type of editing in which you do not
need to assemble the program chronologically
from beginning to end.
NTFS Acronym for New Technology File
System. A file system used on Windows
computers.
