■ TUTORIAL: BUILDING A TIMELINE

Source and Record Timeline Toggling (Xpress Pro Only)
The Source record Timeline toggle switch is located at the bottom left of the Timeline
window in Xpress Pro. Using this switch will allow you to switch between the Timeline
in the Record monitor to the Timeline in the Source monitor. At first look, it may
appear to be absolutely useless. But it’s not, as we shall see.
If you are editing using a sequence as the source, the Source record toggle switch
is indispensable. For example, if you need to load a previously edited sequence into the
Source side and edit it into a new sequence, you can click the Source record toggle and
see the edits that were made in the sequence. This makes it easier when using other
sequences as source. You can mark at specific points in your source Timeline and reduce
any worrying about creating flash frames.
By selecting Sample Plot in the Timeline Fast menu, you are able to see a visual
representation of your audio. Using this in combination with toggling your Timeline to
the source makes finding audio cues and takes a very fast visual procedure, saving
loads of time you may otherwise spend listening for those cues.
Tutorial: Building a Timeline
Now that we’ve covered all of the aspects of the Timeline, let’s take some of the impor-
tant features and try them out! First, launch Avid Free DV or Avid Xpress Pro and
open up the Avid Made Easy Project.
Creating Bars and Tone
In this segment of the tutorial, we will create a brand new sequence and fill it with bars
and tone. First, let’s create a new bin and, within that, a new sequence:
1. Click the Project Manager window.
2. Select the Bins tab (see Figure 4.35).
3. Click the New Bins button.
4. Name the bin Bars and Tone.
