GLOSSARY ■
diffuse Referring to scattered light.
digital A signal that contains information in a
binary form. Digital signals are often per-
ceived incorrectly as being lossless. However,
some are compressed, others are not.
digital cut An output to videotape of your
project direct from a nonlinear editor (NLE).
digital encoding Referring to the transforma-
tion of any analog information into digital
values.
digital recording A method of recording in
which the recorded signal is encoded on the
tape as binary digits and then is decoded dur-
ing playback.
digitally record To convert analog video and
audio signals to digital signals.
digitize Also known as capture. To input
video and/or audio into a digital nonlinear
editor (NLE) format. The process of convert-
ing analog signals to digital values. In some
cases, a process of transferring digital values
from one storage medium to another. Can
also refer to any type of capture of media
into a digital format, such as scanning a
photograph into a JPEG file.
direct digital interface The interconnection of
digital audio or video equipment without
analog conversion of the signal.
direction handle A line extending from a con-
trol point that controls the direction of a
Bézier curve.
disk The medium used to store digital data.
Also called hard disk or drive.
display A device that presents images to an
observer. Could be a monitor, television, etc.
dissolve An effect between video or audio
sources in which one source is faded out
overlapping another source as it is faded in.
D-mode A linear method of assembling an
edit decision list (EDL). In D-mode assem-
blies, the editing system performs edits in the
order in which they will appear on the mas-
ter with the exception of multiple source
events (dissolves, effects, wipes, graphic over-
lays) that are performed at the end.
DNR Acronym for digital noise reduction. An
option used in telecine that can virtually
eliminate all sources of noise on the film.
Potentially hazardous to use because it can
also remove grain.
dongle A hardware device used as a key to
control the use of licensed software. Most
modern dongles are USB-based.
double-perf film Film stock with perforations
along both edges of the film.
double system Any film- or video-recording
system in which picture and sound are
recorded on separate media. A double system
requires the resyncing of picture and sound
during postproduction.
drop frame A timecode-counting method that
reflects real time. To compensate for the base
30 timecode count and the actual frame rate
of National Television Standards Committee
(NTSC) video (29.97 fps), drop-frame time-
code skips ahead two frames in the count at
the top of every minute, excepting the tenth
minutes of time. Does not exist in phase
alternating line (PAL) video.
drop shadow A shadow that is offset from a
title or shape and superimposed onto a
background to give the sense of spatial
dimension.

broadcast that incorporates transmission of a
