PALETTE EFFECTS
When using the eyedropper tool on your border color, both the border and
blend colors change to the selected color. To prevent this and allow the system to keep
the existing blend color, hold down the Alt/Option key while selecting the border color
with the eyedropper. The system does not change border color when the eyedropper is
used to select a blend color.
Acceleration
Acceleration determines the type of motion and fluidity between keyframes of an effect.
Linear acceleration moves at a constant speed and motion and is indicated in the Accel-
eration parameter as 0 Acceleration.
The opposite of linear acceleration is smooth acceleration, which eases in and
out of motion between keyframes. This is indicated in the Acceleration parameter as
any number between 1 and 100. Thus a smooth acceleration starts at the keyframe and
gradually accelerates, then slows as it arrives at the next keyframe. A linear acceleration
does not change speed as it leaves one keyframe or arrives at the next. Smooth acceler-
ation is much more natural, and linear is much more mechanical.
There are times to use each of them. An example of linear use is when you have
images in boxes moving across the screen at once. If smooth acceleration is used, their
speed and proximity to each other vary, and the result is something akin to a massive
freeway collision. Using linear acceleration allows you to keep the images uniform in
motion, provided that proper keyframing is used.
Smooth acceleration can be used when zooming in a picture to cover another.
The acceleration increases as the image comes closer, then slows down to rest at its full
screen position.
Although Acceleration can change the motion of the effect overall, you cannot
vary the Acceleration parameter between keyframes. Acceleration is intended to be
used over the entire effect.
Note: A good abbreviation to remember is ROY G BIV, which are the colors of the spectrum, represented
by each letter in the name (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). Thus, if your border color is
yellow and the blend color is violet, the gradient will contain all the colors in between those two in the color
spectrum—that is,green, blue and indigo—will also be displayed in the gradient.
