CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING
RS-422
RS-422 is an older serial protocol that was created to control professional video decks.
Using RS-422 allows you to control a deck and read timecode. It does not, however,
transport any video data.
If you are using a deck that has an RS-422 connection (see Figure 2.7) but not
FireWire, you can connect it to your computer to control the deck. The video and
audio data must be sent through a transcoder.
RS-422 is a nine-pin connector. Although your deck uses RS-422, there is no
such connector on your computer. There is a nine-pin connector on most PCs that uses
the RS-232C protocol. To connect your deck to this computer connector, you need a
converter, such as Addenda’s Rosetta Stone. The converter takes RS-422 information
and translates it to RS-232C; the information conversion flows both ways so that your
deck can talk to the computer, and vice versa.
For RS-422 connection to a Mac, you’ll need either a Keyspan adapter (shown
in Figure 2.8) or a Gee Three Stealth card. These tools convert RS-422 into serial lan-
guage that the Mac understands.

RS-422 into Mac serial.

Note: The Avid website has a complete list of “qualified”decks that can be used with Free DV and Xpress
Pro.Although Avid tries to keep up with every current DV deck and DV camera that is manufactured,in some
cases they might not yet be qualified. For these decks and cameras, you can select Generic Deck in the Capture
tool and usually get some functionality.
