CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING ■
Capturing Directly with FireWire
If you intend to capture directly from a DV deck to Free DV or Xpress Pro, it’s a lot
simpler to set up:
1. First, turn off the computer.
2. Attach a four-pin FireWire connector to the DV out connection on your deck or
camera.
3. Connect a six-pin FireWire connector directly to the FireWire input on your
computer.
4. Turn on your camera or deck and insert your first tape.
5. Boot the computer and then launch Free DV or Xpress Pro.
Now you can jump ahead to the “Configuring the Deck or Camera” section.
Capturing with a DV Transcoder
If you do not have a DV deck and are using a transcoder, such as those manufactured
by Canopus and other companies, follow these instructions.
First, turn off your computer. Connect your deck or camera to the transcoder.
Each transcoder has a variety of different connection options. Remember that the
options are dependent on which types of outputs are available on your camera or deck,
and which types of inputs are available on your transcoder. The order of preferences is
as follows:
1. Component (R-Y, B-Y, Y)
2. S-Video
3. Composite
To make the transcoder work, you must have duplicate connections on both the
deck or camera and the transcoder.
Connect the DV out directly to your FireWire input on your computer. Next,
turn on the deck and insert your first tape. Boot up the computer and start the Free DV
or Xpress Pro application.
Configuring the Deck or Camera
The next step is to configure your camera or deck so that it works correctly with the
Free DV or Xpress Pro software:
1. After you launch the application, create a new project named “Capturing Exer-
cise.” Be sure the frame rate is 30i if you are working with NTSC video. If you
are working with PAL video, select 25i.
2. Add the project and select it. The interface should appear on your screen.
