CHAPTER 4: THE TIMELINE
The Rules of Patching Tracks
There are certain rules that apply when using the track selector panels. Each rule is
simple and might even seem to be common sense, but just in case, let’s look at them:
First, you cannot edit deselected tracks from your Source side to the Record side.
Although this may seem obvious, it’s a common error. Select the Source tracks so
that they are highlighted and horizontally lined up.
The second rule is complementary to the first one. You cannot edit on deselected
tracks on the Record side to from selected tracks on the Source side.
Sync Locks
On the left side of each Record track panel indicator is another minipanel. Using
this box will engage sync locks and will also allow you to lock tracks, as we will see
later.
Using this tool and the Sync Locks function has advantages and disadvantages.
Sync locks will allow you to keep things in sync, no matter what you do. (The excep-
tion here is Timeline editing, which we’ll discuss later.)
The advantage is that after you engage sync locks, it’s a kind of worry-free
editing. If your edits are simple and basic—just building a nonintricate audio and
video track—you’ll probably find sync locks indisposable. When I say “simple and
basic,” I mean you’re just laying down chunks of synchronous audio and video
together, and then going back and adding some cutaways as video-only over the
basic track.
But if you have to move bits of audio here and bits of video there, and you’re
dealing with multiple video tracks and outside nonsynchronous audio, using sync locks
might not be as desirable. You might even find yourself mired in situations in which
the sync locks took over to “protect” you, and you didn’t want that kind of protection.
When you create a new sequence, the Timeline will default to sync locks being
on. Sync lock settings are saved with your Timeline.
Although I personally don’t use the Sync Locks option, that decision is given to
you. To apply sync locks, click the left minipanel of the Record track panel indicator. A
slash mark appears. The selected track has locked sync (see Figure 4.10).
To turn sync locks off, click the minipanel on the left of the Record track panel
indicator again. The Sync Locks indicator will disappear.
Note: A word of caution:Older versions of Avid software, from the not-too-distant past,do not save sync
lock settings with the Timeline and always default to off when you reopen the Timeline.
