edit rate Also called fps or frames per second.
The number of frames per second that a spe-
cific type of media uses. Film is 24fps, phase
alternating line (PAL) video is 25fps and
National Television Standards Committee
(NTSC) video is 29.97fps (sometimes
referred to as 30fps).
EDL Acronym for edit decision list. A list of
edits in a sequence showing timecode num-
bers for both source and record tapes as
well as source tracks for each edit. Used for
online video editing, sound conforming,
spotting, and mixing, and in some cases,
for comparison with telecine logs for match-
back. Can be used with some computerized
video-editing equipment for automatic
conforming.
effects The manipulation of an audio or a
video signal. In video, can include keys, dis-
solves, Picture In Picture, morphing, and oth-
ers. In audio, some possible effects include
reverb, pitch shifting, and flanging.
electronic editing The assembly of video in
which scenes are joined together electroni-
cally instead of physically splicing tape.
E-mode In linear editing, a C-mode edit deci-
sion list (EDL) in which all effects (dissolves,
wipes, and graphic overlays) are performed
at the end.
equalization The balancing of various frequen-
cies to create a desired sound. Can also refer
to the balancing of color and luminance in
color correction.
event An edit number assigned by a linear
editing system in an EDL (edit decision list).
Evertz A manufacturer of motion picture
equipment. Also refers to a telecine log for-
mat whose files end with an .ftl suffix.
exposure The quantity of light that is cap-
tured by a receptor such as film or a video
camera charged coupling device (CCD).
extract The process of removing a specific
section from an edited sequence and closing
the resulting gap.
eyedropper A tool used for sampling a color
from a screen image that can be used with
titles or color correction.
facing pages Pages printed on the back of
three-hole punch paper used in conjunction
with a script so that the editor can see both
script pages and script supervisor notes. Con-
tain scene, take, camera, and other details
recorded while on location.
fade A dissolve from video to black or from
audio to silence, or vice versa.
FAT Acronym for File Allocation Table. A type
of file system used on Windows computers.
FCC Acronym for Federal Communications
Commission. The governing body for radio
and television transmission in the United States.
feedback A loud squeal or howl caused when
the sound is looped through a source to itself
and reamplified.
field In interlaced video formats, a single
scan of the raster that includes every other
line of resolution, comprising one-half of an
interlaced video frame.
file system A way of organizing directories
and files on a computer.
filler clip A segment of a sequence that con-
tains no audio or video information.
film timecode Timecode added to the film neg-
ative during a film shoot via a film timecode
generator. Used much like key code and edge
numbers for counting film frames.
