CHAPTER 5: TRIMMING ■
Trimming Using Digital Scrub
Move forward to the next transition. Again, using the skills you’ve learned so far, find
the transition side that contains the bad frames. Be sure to select all the tracks.
Now you’ll use roller trimming again. But in this case, go ahead and use digital
scrub as well. Turn on digital scrub by pressing the Caps Lock key on your keyboard.
Click one of the trim rollers and move it backward and forward. Notice that
you can tell when the bad audio plays back. Adjust the trim appropriately and move to
the next transition of the blip sequence.
Using the Trim Buttons
In this next transition, you’ll use the Trim buttons, which are on your keyboard on the
bottom right and on the trim interface underneath the A-side monitor in Trim mode.
Once again, use your skills to determine the side to be trimmed—select all tracks
on the track panel selector to stay in sync.
Here is how the buttons work: Each one points in a direction, either backward
or forward. Each button with only one direction indicator trims one frame. The buttons
with two direction indicators trim two frames. Go ahead and trim using these buttons.
Trimming on the Fly
Here is where it really gets fun. Go to the next transition. Find the side to be trimmed
and then select it. Be sure to select all tracks.
In this case, you’ll trim on the fly and find out how good your reactions are!
Play back the trim loop and place your finger over the E, I, O, or R key on the key-
board. Let the transition play a few times to anticipate where you need to trim. Take
your time; you’re in no hurry here.
When you think you’ve found the correct point to update the trim, press the but-
ton (I refer to this as “pulling the trigger”). Note that the play transition loop continues
to play back. If you messed up the first time, go ahead and let it play and pull the trig-
ger again. Each time you press the key, the transition point updates. It takes a little get-
ting used to this method, but the uses for it are endless.
Now continue to use your skills and finish the entire blip sequence. Be sure to
use a variety of trim methods. For Xpress Pro users, the last two transitions can be
slipped and slid. You can also try out the J-K-L method of trimming.
