NESTED EFFECTS AND COLLAPSING (XPRESS PRO)
Nesting Order and Autonesting
The order in which you build your nests within nests is very important. For example, if
you want to add a color effect and a matte to a picture, the color effect would need to
go inside of the matte effect. Otherwise, the matte would show evidence of the color
effect as well. Your ability to prevent these issues before they happen will increase
through experience and previsualization.
Even when a multiple nest effect has been poorly planned, Xpress Pro has a
solution to easily fix this. You can change the order of nested effects inside of the Effect
Editor. When an effect is nested inside another effect and Advanced Keyframe mode is
selected, the Nesting Priority icon appears for each effect nested inside of the original
effect.
In order to use this feature, the base effect on the Timeline must have advanced
keyframing capability. Without it, you cannot reorder the nest. In the earlier example
of expansion nests, we used a Submaster effect, which does not have advanced keyfram-
ing. To solve this problem, we’ll need to add an effect on top of the Submaster.
Autonesting
You can also place an effect on top of a nest. This is referred to as autonesting. Using
Segment mode, click the base track of your nest (V1, for example.) Go into the Effect
palette. We’re going to use a Resize effect, which has advanced keyframe capabilities.
To autonest the Picture In Picture on top of the Submaster effect, press Alt/Opt and
double-click the Resize icon in your effect palette. The resize icon should appear on the
base track of the Timeline. The reason we chose the Resize effect is because it defaults
to 100 percent screen size, so no actual adjustments are necessary.
Effect Priority
Now we’ll take a look at the Resize effect in the Effect Editor. At the bottom of the
screen is the purple layered icon used to promote the effect to advanced keyframes.
Click this icon, and the Effect Editor expands. You should also be able to see all of the
nested effects inside. To the right of each effect is blue layering icon. This is the Effect
Priority icon, which allows you to determine the nesting order. You can click and drag
the effects vertically to change the order in which the effects are processed by Xpress
Pro. Try grabbing the color effect and moving it below the Avid Pan and Zoom. If you
do this, the color is added before the image is imported for Pan and Zoom. As a result,
the color adjustments won’t show! The same is true when placing the Flop or Mask
effects at the bottom.
