CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING
3. Select the Edit tab.
4. Select the Enable Edit to Timeline button.
5. Choose the number of frames that you want captured as a handle to each clip. A
handle is a number of frames digitized before and after the in and out timecodes
specified for the clip.
Why use handles? If you decide to nudge an edit or use a transition, you’ll need
some extra media. Without handles, that media might not be present. Better to
be safe than sorry, especially on a tight deadline.
6. Select OK.
Before you begin digitizing, create a new sequence in which the footage will be
captured if you don’t have one open already.
Patching Directly When Capturing to the Timeline
You can patch your tracks before you capture to the Timeline. There are several rea-
sons to do this. If, for example, you need a voiceover on audio Track 2, but the
voiceover exists on Track 1 of your source, you can patch the track before capture.
To patch tracks before capturing to the Timeline:
1. Click the track selector for the source track in the Capture tool.
2. Click and hold on the track selected. A pop-up menu of destination tracks
appears.
3. Choose the destination track in the sequence for this source track.
After you begin capturing footage, the track is patched directly to its proper des-
tination in the sequence.
Capturing Across Timecode Breaks
One of the Capture Settings that is very useful is Capture Across Timecode Breaks.
Created originally during the development of Avid MultiCam, Capture Across Time-
code Breaks is used to capture entire tapes that have frequent start/stops where the
camera stops rolling and the timecode is not continuous. When selected, Capture
Across Timecode Breaks will enable the system to stop when the timecode stops, create
a clip, and then roll forward to find the next piece of timecode and sync. When the
next piece is found, the system rolls forward to a point where sync is stable, prerolls,
and begins recording again. There are only three caveats when using this option:
You must have plenty of preroll on your shots. If not, the system may go past
the desired in point and begin capturing later than anticipated. When shooting,
it is a good idea to count to ten after the tape is recording and before beginning
your shot. Without enough preroll, you will have to capture manually.
