A:
WHAT’S NEW IN XPRESS PRO HD
Real-Time DV-25 Bitstream Output
The newest version of Xpress Pro HD is capable of a DV-25 bitstream output. What is
a DV-25 bitstream output? Well, in the case of Xpress Pro, it is a DV-25 decompression
and recompression of the video output. Why would you need it? If you have a Mojo, it
doesn’t really matter if you use real-time bitstream, but it is possible to use. If you have
no Mojo, it means real-time effects in your timeline will not have to be rendered! (As
long as you have a fully qualified Avid system that meets the basic requirements for
Xpress Pro.)
With a Mojo
If you have a Mojo and want to use a DV-25 bitstream output, you need a separate
FireWire card on a different bus to use Xpress Pro HD with the Mojo. Make sure that
your computer has a separate bus before you add the card. If you do not have a sepa-
rate bus, you’ll have to use the Mojo the same as before.
When you use a Mojo with the new DV-25 bitstream, you have to first select the
new DNA/1394 Toggle button . (DNA stands for Digital Nonlinear Acceleration,
an Avid marketing term.) When the button is in DNA mode (which is the default), a
Mojo works normally as before, but all outputs are turned off and you cannot output a
DV-25 bitstream. However, you still have monitoring capabilities. But you can configure
it for bitstream encoding via FireWire, and the output is turned on.
Without a Mojo
If you do not have a Mojo, the DNA/1394 toggle button will be in 1394 mode and
cannot be toggled. From there, you have to configure for a bitstream output. Once
configured, real-time effects play back without a Mojo.
Configuring the Bitstream
Whether or not you have a Mojo, the configuring for a real-time bitstream output is
the same—except in the case of a Mojo, the DNA/1394 Toggle should be set to 1394.
Without a Mojo, it automatically is set to 1394, as stated previously.
First, right-click the Video Quality button at the bottom of the Timeline (see Fig-
ure A.1); choose Realtime Encoding, right-click again, and choose Format
> DV 25 411
(4:1:1 is just the subsampling rate). You also have the option of DV-50 if the source is
Note: A Mojo cannot show HD resolutions. You can, however, edit with the Mojo.It does not give you an
HD output.
