Tutorial: Import and Export

There are several graphic files and QuickTime movies on the accompanying DVD. Try

to import each one of them and then export them using the options described in this

chapter. After you finish, we’ll move on to digital cut and video output.

Still Graphics

There are several still graphics in the Import folder of your DVD. Take a look at each

one and determine which of the import options will be needed when you import into

Free DV/Xpress Pro.

As you import, you can see how the Avid handles material. Be sure to watch out

for stretched graphics. In some cases, the file is oriented horizontally and vertically out

of the pixel aspect ratio. You will have to determine which option to choose.

Note that one set of graphics is sequential. How do we import a sequential set of

graphics? If you forgot, go back to the Import menu and take a look in the bottom left.

If you can’t successfully import these graphics, try reading the Import section

over again, particularly the Options section.

QuickTime Movies

Try importing and exporting the QuickTime movies in the Import menu. After you fin-

ish, try exporting a QuickTime reference movie. Take the exported reference file and

using Get Info (Mac) or Properties (Windows), note the small file size. The original is

much larger, isn’t it?

Adding Tone

To add tone:

1. Select your audio tool (Ctrl+1/F+1).

2. Click the Peak Hold (PH) button.

3. Select Create Tone Media.

The Tone Media menu appears (see Figure 6.31).

Tone Media Level in dB The tone media levels are preset at -14dB (see Figure 6.32).

This is an incorrect rate for digital audio standard levels. Some digital systems are set

for -20dB. On most systems, -20dB digital equals 0 VU analog.
