CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU CAPTURE
Xpress Pro uses several resolutions, as shown in Figure 2.4. If your source is a
DV tape, you should use DV 25 OMF if you want full resolution. If you’re just cutting
an offline version of the project, you can save drive space by selecting 15:1s.
Figure 2.4 Xpress Pro supports DV and other resolutions as well.
With the optional Mojo, you can select DVC Pro resolution (DV 50) or 1:1 reso-
lution. If your source tapes are DVC Pro, selecting the DV 50 resolution will give you
lossless quality. If your tapes are another format, such as digital beta, selecting the 1:1
compression will give you lossless quality and no compression.
For film projects that run at 23.976 frames per second (fps), you have a choice
between DV 25 quality, or 14:1 and 28:1 for offline resolution. When you use 28:1
compression, the picture quality is substandard at best, but I found that it can work in
situations in which drive space is precious. As long as you can detect focus in the pic-
ture and you’re not planning to screen these images in front of the producer, 28:1
works well enough. However, I highly recommend that you batch digitize your com-
pleted pieces at a higher resolution before screening them.
Determining the Final Product
Before you determine which resolution you should use, it might be a good idea to
determine the final product that is to be created. For example, if your final product will
be original camera negative (OCN) from film, you can use low resolution for the proj-
ect. For film projects, 14:1 is the de facto standard. If it is to be a DVD, you’ll want
higher quality. Of course, you can always capture at low resolution and then batch
capture your final cut at higher resolution, but time for this will need to be factored
into your postproduction schedule.
I like to ask the producer or director about the final product so that it is clear
to me how the edit should be approached. In some cases, the director or producer
isn’t sure what the final product would be. Coaxing them to determine the final
product will enable you to establish your settings, select resolutions, and determine
the right amount of drive space correctly. Of course, it doesn’t always go perfectly as
